Sutherland was greatly influenced by his parents who were both artistically inclined. He trained at the Brooks Art Institute in Santa Barbara, then worked as a freelance artist for 5 years and as a commercial artist at Hughes Aircraft Company for 16 years illustrating military hardware and satellites. He was driven to return to freelance art because "The need to express an emotion or a mood with paint, conte crayon, or pen and ink was what really appealed to my creative sensibilities." His attention to detail and incredible deftness at bringing scenes to life are what makes his illustrations so masterful. He lives in California.
