Description

Geotechnical Instrumentation and Applications explains the geotechnical issues encountered in the implementation of construction projects dealing with ground, groundwater, and earth infrastructures, including land reclamations, dams, embankments, landfill construction, excavations, and tunnelling. The book describes the types of geotechnical instrumentation available in the market and walks readers through the geotechnical issues usually encountered in construction projects and observational methods applying geotechnical instruments, planning, and implementation of geotechnical instrumentation projects. Detailed coverage of the calibration and installation process of geotechnical instruments, the verification of measured data, and the recording and documentation of as-built drawings of geotechnical instruments installed are presented. Coverage also includes methods of measurement, recommended monitoring frequencies for manual monitoring and methods of data processing and presentation, as well as analyses and interpretations of monitored data for performance assessment. Factors affecting measured instrument data are also discussed with a few examples. Case studies are presented with field data collected during the implementation of large-scale ground improvements and ground engineering projects involving extensive geotechnical instrumentation works. The book will be an ideal text for upper-undergraduate and graduate geotechnical engineering, foundation engineering, and soil mechanics courses and a hands-on reference for practitioners who apply geotechnical instrumentation in the construction industry.

About the Author

Myint Win Bo, Ph.D., is President and Chief Executive Officer of Bo & Associates Inc., an engineering services firm specializing in geotechnical, environmental, and geological engineering, hydrogeology, and material testing. Dr. Bo is also an adjunct professor for several universities, including York University and Toronto Metropolitan University, where he has supervised research students for many years. He is an experienced practicing engineer, geologist, environmentalist, scientist, and entrepreneur as well as an educator who has worked around the world in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. He graduated with a BSc in geology from the University of Yangon (Rangoon), received a Postgraduate Diploma in hydrogeology from University College London, UK, and an MSc from the University of London, UK. He obtained his Ph.D. in civil engineering (specializing in geotechnics) from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and a Certificate of Executive Managementand Leadership from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Dr. Bo is a Fellow of the Geological Society, London, UK, and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), UK, and has been serving professional societies at both national and international levels for many years and has presented more than 40 special and keynote lectures and workshops at international conferences, tertiary institutions, and professional associations. He is the author of five books, five book chapters, and more than 200 technical papers in international journals and conferences. Dr. Bo is an Editor for five international journals, including Environmental Geotechnics and Geotechnical Research, both published by the ICE, UK. His works have been cited more than 5,500 times in refereed journals and proceedings. Dr. Bo is a winner of more than $1 million in research grants and a winner of many awards for personal achievements as well as designing many award-winning projects aroundthe world. Jeffrey Barrett, MScE., P.Eng., is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with GEOKON, an international geotechnical and structural instrumentation manufacturer. He has over 15 years of industry experience, including seven years with instrumentation manufacturers and ten years with a global engineering firm. He has a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, an M.Sc. in Geotechnical Engineering, and a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship from the University of New Brunswick. As a consulting engineer, he has held several roles, including national technical lead for numerical modelling, project manager, and technical lead for multidisciplinary projects in the mining and civil construction sector, including geotechnical investigations, instrumentation and monitoring, NI 43-101 mining studies, detailed design, construction, operations, dam safety inspections, dam safety reviews, and mine closure. He led the numerical modelling analysis of several high-profile projects relating to slopes, tailings dams, water dams, and coal combustion residual (CCR) facilities in Canada and the United States. In the geotechnical instrumentation sector, he has worked extensively in the research and development of new geotechnical and structural instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and data interpretation software. Instrumentation projects include several high-profile sites, including high-speed rail lines in China, metro projects in Egypt, Boone Dam, Oroville Dam, Samarco Mine, Zelazny Most Tailings Dam, and Canadian oil sands projects.
