The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccol Machiavelli. From his correspondence, a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus The Prince is one of the most influential works in political theory and realpolitik. Arguably, it is the first work on realpolitik. Machiavelli wrote this book during a time of great turmoil in Italy, and from his long experience as a diplomat he came to the conclusion that lofty ideals had no place in politics.
